Hip Hop Saved My Life. Lupe Fiasco feat Nikki Jean
This song was written for cats just like me. I've been emceeing for most of my life, yet I still haven't found my way out....or so it seems. Throughout my years Hip Hop has been there to save me. No matter where I have traveled The Marine Corps, College, Jail etc. I swear I've been through it.
I remember being in Marine Corps Basic training taking my swim qualification exam (needless 2 say a brotha couldn't swim a lick....i'm off the block)! Anyhow one of the suggestions that the Drill Instructors gave us was to think of one of our favorite songs to help us relax so that we were able to float. I didn't think that shit would work a lick, but it did. As I was backstroking (no homo) the distance of the swimming pool I started to recite Black Thought's verse from "The Love of My Life" off of the Roots "Things Fall Apart" album. It seemed that those words calmed my soul to the point where I eventually forgot where i was and what I was doing. I strongly beleive that if I hadn't done that...........I would've floated to the bottom of the pool, panicked and would have had an extra weeks stay in Marine Corp Boot Camp. Which I didn't at all want to have to do. Hip Hop saved my life.
As I sit here pondering my exisence as an emcee stuck in obscurity I ask Hip Hop to come through one mo' time and relax my soul so that I can float through the wavy waters that I call my life.
